[Sticky Post] Journal memes/activities/whatever

Phew, just look at the hour, I spent the whole afternoon and night coding and revamping this place - methinks the outcome was quite worth a try though ♥.
However, for my journal's sake, I decided to group every user-friendly writing meme/contest/challenge here, so check this post to discover news from now on! ♥

My God, the content of this journal as a whole is so damn embarassing I cannot bring myself to resuscitate it.

LiveJournal

So, after nearly a decade at this site, LJ finally does something that makes me actually rage. No popcorn and laughing as the masses storm to news posts complaining, this time I'm actually worried.

A while back I was invited to help out with BETA testing new LJ services (I got this invite via [livejournal.com profile] lj_releases).

They have just announced BETA testing of a new friendslist.

LJ is planning on redoing everyone's friendslists in the style of the new comment page and update page. They want to copy tumblr and make your friendslist into a dashboard-like system page (infinite scrolling and all). It's also been renamed to "feed" (this I don't mind too much, though). In fact the whole dashboard idea with infinite scrolling wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the fact that everyone will be locked to one specific layout. The system style comment pages are bad enough, but now I'll have to strain my eyes reading my flist? That defeats the purpose of this entire site. The font, use of whitespace, oversized boxes and UI elements ... all contribute to making the page difficult to read, on a site where all you do is read. Aaaah. Even just the possibility of adjusting the font (style and size) would make this suggestion easier to swallow, but it's still not something I'd want for my journal. It would not improve my LJ experience in any way (in fact it would most likely make my daily LJ activities more time consuming).

Now, I wasn't able to make the BETA page display my own friendslist, so I apologise to the random users who are featured in the screenshot, but to give everyone an idea, the below image shows you what your friendslist probably will look like in a couple of months.

(Click for big)

I never switched over from Dystopia, so that adds to the weirdness. You're going to have to picture this with the standard LiveJournal drop down navigation + no blue sidebar to the left. Click the screenshots for bigger versions.

Top of page with links to journal, archive, profile

Example of text heavy post as displayed on friendslist

New buttons to the right replace the navigation strip. One tab for filters

One tab for Archive/Calendar, you can filter your feed to display posts from one specific date. These buttons follow along as you scroll down the page (infinite scrolling).

All friendslists will look the same.

Snippet from the locked post at [livejournal.com profile] lj_releases:
The friends page has been redesigned as a system page for all users, and is now available for Beta testers. There is a link at the top of your friends page allowing you to switch between the new and old versions, and will later go into public beta testing. You can switch back and forth between both versions throughout beta testing.

PUBLIC POST AT [livejournal.com profile] lj_releases ABOUT THE NEW FRIENDSLIST: http://lj-releases.livejournal.com/79480.html.

You can also see the proposed changes for yourself by enabling the BETA on your own journal (instructions from [livejournal.com profile] ruljautonews):
It's trivially easy to test beta features.
1) Go to [livejournal.com profile] lj_ru_beta and request to join.
2) Wait to get confirmation that you've been accepted into the community (this could take a few hours.)
3) Go to this page and choose Go To under Beta.
4) That's it, you're now testing the beta release. All site-scheme pages should now display a big "BETA BETA BETA BETA BETA BETA" in yellow letters across the top.
5) You could make comments in the [livejournal.com profile] lj_ru_beta post, but if you do please keep this in mind: the majority of commenters there don't speak English and if they do it's not their primary language. Machine translation of Russian is lousy. "My hovercraft is full of eels" lousy. While you can engage in basic dialogue and get a feel for what the other person is saying, don't get too hung up on anyone's phrasing.

You can easily switch back to the old version.

Make sure you let LJ know what you think of these proposed changes, I can't be the only one who thinks this is a horrible idea.

ETA: It's nice to see that I'm not the only one worried about the proposed changes, but please direct your feedback through the proper channels. This is a private journal, I have no affiliation with LJ. Please also be respectful when addressing the LJ staff. They are just doing their jobs. Thanks!

Like notes and clothes you've left behind.

Japanese II is in two days, more or less, I just can't bring myself to finish the last batch of characters. I feel so bored and fed up with everything. Aaand it's not the right time to, I guess, but I'm rewatching Charmed for the first time, in English, since I was nine. I was expecting myself to say "it's so cheesy and 90s, what was I thinking, my childhood memories are ruined now", but... I'm loving it even more now. The acting is so good, and I am realising the show is the first thing I used to fangirl about, other than Sailor Moon, before even knowing what fangirling was in the first place. Every episode makes my stomach knot with nostalgia and feelings, it feels so strange - I swear I remember some episodes so vividly, and it's like meeting old friends again.
Is it legit to say SPOILERS after fifteen years? )

Gnaw.

I'd never thought I'd resuscitate this journal by posting from my new smartphone during the most absurd train ride ever. We're fifty minutes late and counting, our coach is so full it's unbearable, and people just don't know how to behave. I have a text editor, too, what if I drabble for a while then post it here? Aaawww, the joy of technology!

Hush, child, darkness will rise from the deep, and carry you off to sleep...

Yes, I'm alive and I know you don't believe me, just look at the mess this place is now XD. I have every intention of coming back, possibly with a long post about how Versailles no Bara tugs at my feelings and rips them open, and how rewatching "Charmed" is a very bad thing - I mean, despite my worst fears, it's not crappy at all after all these years, and that's exactly the thing, because it triggers my nostalgia like, badly. Then again, you all know how I get when I have to talk about my own vision of fandom in general - I just cannot stop, which brings to endless posts, which makes the process incredibly daunting, so I guess I'll procrastinate everything (again), hoping to have enough motivation once I pass Japanese II (which is incredibly close but I'm afraid "once I pass" could very well mean YEARS)!

Seriously. WHAT THE FLYING FUCK WORLD.

"File-sharers, beware: By July 12, major US Internet service providers (ISPs) will voluntarily begin serving as copyright police for the entertainment industry, according to Cary Sherman, chief executive of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The so-called “six-strikes” plan is said to be one of the most effective anti-piracy efforts ever established in the US."

The article goes on to give details. After six notices, internet providers will decide to throttle a person's internet speed, or cut it off altogether. I don't know if they will crack down on torrents only, or if it is up to the internet provider. I get the sense it is up to the internet provider. So some people could get away with downloading non torrents, while others might get their internet service cut off. I urge you to click it and read, as we all know people who download.

No more downloading eps of your favorite shows for vidding, gifs, or fanfiction art. No more downloading screencaps possibly. I'm so sorry my friends. I don't even know if BT Guard will work to protect you, but I would google it if I were you. It is a professional service that supposedly can protect you from the invasive eyes of your internet provider.

Just, my friends, please make each other aware. Please be aware of the date JULY 12TH. Mark your calendar and double check with your internet provider by then. If you start receiving notices of downloaded activity, this is why. And your internet service could be throttled or cut off.

Fox news confirms this:

The fiasco continues

ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

Essential ACTA Resources

  • Read more about ACTA here: ACTA Fact Sheet
  • Read the authentic version of the ACTA text as of 15 April 2011, as finalized by participating countries here: ACTA Finalized Text
  • Follow the history of the treaty’s formation here: ACTA history
  • Read letters from U.S. Senator Ron Wyden wherein he challenges the constitutionality of ACTA: Letter 1 | Letter 2 | Read the Administration’s Response to Wyden’s First Letter here: Response
  • Watch a short informative video on ACTA: ACTA Video
  • Watch a lulzy video on ACTA: Lulzy Video

Say NO to ACTA. It is essential to spread awareness and get the word out on ACTA.

Something must be wrong with me lately.

Half an hour ago I spilled milk on the touchpad and Subaru II, my laptop, wouldn't start again. I think I died for, like, ten minutes while I was trying to vacuum it all away. Now it's a bit sticky and I'm afraid it will smell a bit until I clean it for good, but it looks fine. The battery level gave me a read light until a few seconds ago, despite it being all charged. I hope I didn't ruin it.
I just don't understand what the heck is wrong with me lately. Yesterday, with my problems with being taken to class, my brain was convinced it was Sunday, and since I had no one available to pick me up, I overslept and beat the crap out of myself when I realised it. The day before, after I did the washing up, the bowl with all of my fragile plates went upside down because I apparently didn't pay attention to their actual balance, so they smashed on the ground. All of them. And I'm prettysure I did something else and I don't remember.
I mean, what the hell. I really don't know.

Or maybe I do.

[Recs][Irène Némirovsky - L'affare Kurilov] E chi l'ha detto che le donne scrivono solo smancerie?

Bon ~
Buonasera a tutti, gente \o!

[Iconpost with related babbling] Like fire / hellfire / this fire in my skin...

Home o/

I haven't rewatched The Hunchback of Nôtre-Dame in ages. I think last time I was, like, six, and that's for two main reasons.
Obnoxiously long post ahead this way if you want )

Everything was prompted by the fact that I've stumbled into Hellfire again after more than ten years, and I had just finished reading the novel. And I have to say, this is the most amazing, darkest, daring thing Disney ever inserted in a motion picture. The song alone is worth the whole film. It's beautiful on so many levels, and more complex than it looks - did you ever notice the Confiteor the priests chant beneath the lyrics contradicts what Frollo is trying to convince himself about? And I love Frollo embracing Esmeralda as her silhouette comes out of the fireplace. Somehow, it looks like something novel!Frollo could do. And I also have to say, I think Eros Pagni - Frollo's Italian voice actor - sounds shamefully passionate and sexy and evil while he sings, even more than Tony Jay.

'Hellfire' - Tony Jay )

'Fuoco d'Inferno' - Eros Pagni )

Actually, most of these musings come from a bunch of interesting thoughts [livejournal.com profile] shu_maat and I shared one afternoon while sipping tea. That girl is one of the most wonderful gifts God - or whoever is in charge up there - blessed me with, along with [livejournal.com profile] harriet_yuuko and everyone else. Thanks. You enrich my life with new perspectives everyday, be it life issues or raw fangirling. I love you, guys ♥.
You think I was done? No way.Hellfire + 2 misc. Frollo/Esmeralda icons below, even if I doubt anyone barely sane would like Frollo among their userpics. Whatever.

And, I MEAN.
